Italian varieties are the story here: Vermentino, Sangiovese and Montepulciano handle the heat better than Cabernet. I have been back many times over five years.

From Austin or San Antonio, give it a full day rather than an afternoon; the distances between wineries are longer than you think.
Best time to visit
Spring and fall. Summer is survivable only with real tolerance for Texas heat.
