Sonoma County
Sonoma is Napa's next-door neighbor, and I find it consistently more enjoyable. It is a collection of AVAs, so picking the right one matters more than picking the right winery.
Best time to visit
May through October for weather; the off-season is when hotel deals appear and you can get a walk-in tasting on a Saturday.
