Paso Robles
Paso Robles is my favorite place to taste in California. A dramatic day-to-night temperature swing keeps acidity in fruit that would otherwise turn jammy, and its real identity is Rhône.
Getting there
San Luis Obispo (SBP) is the closest airport, though flying into San Jose or San Francisco and driving down is often cheaper.
Best time to visit
Spring and fall. Summer regularly clears 100°F, but the tasting rooms are air-conditioned and the crowds thin out.
