Lodi
Lodi is one of California’s most underrated wine regions: old-vine Zinfandel, Spanish and Rhône varieties, easy walk-in tastings and prices that make Napa look steep.
Getting there
Fly into Sacramento (SMF), about an hour away, or drive east from the Bay Area.
Best time to visit
Summer is the quietest season; fall is milder and busier with harvest energy.

Acquiesce Winery
An entire winery of white wines, plus a gorgeous rosé, and it is woman-owned. Rhône whites and rare varieties with a food menu that changes monthly. Even die-hard red drinkers will be won over.
Tasting fee: $10–$20 Walk-ins welcome
-
Bokisch Vineyards
This is where Lodi's not-just-Zin reputation really clicks. The founder pioneered Spanish varieties in California, and the Albariño and Tempranillo are the real deal. I could have stayed all day.
Tasting fee: From $10 Walk-ins welcome
-
Jeremy Wine Co.
Come for the old vines and the experience. I walked a block planted in 1925, then made my own blend in their hands-on Zin Lab, one of the most fun things I did all trip.
Tasting fee: From $15 Walk-ins welcome
Macchia Wines
A really fun, family-owned winery with a bocce court and a stack of award-winning wines. Perfect if you are rolling in with a group.
