I drove New Zealand's North Island in March, during harvest, from Auckland to Wellington. The North Island is where the country makes its best Syrah and Bordeaux-style blends (Hawke's Bay) and world-class Pinot Noir (Martinborough), with Gisborne for Chardonnay and aromatic whites and Waiheke Island still on my list.
