Blogger Collaborations: How to Collaborate with Other Bloggers

how-to-collaborate-with-other-bloggers - Blogger Collaborations: How to Collaborate with Other Bloggers by popular Washington DC blogger Alicia TeniseMe & Julien, for our collab with South Moon Under

It’s been a while since I’ve dropped some blog knowledge over on my little corner of the internet, and this is something I’ve actually been approached about a lot lately: how do you get the blog rolling and collaborate with other bloggers? Blogger to blogger Collaborations are awesome, they’re a great way to introduce yourself to a new blog audience and in turn, grow your blog.

What do I mean when I say “collaborating?” Nope, I do not mean collaborating with giveaways or simply taking photos of one another. Blogger to Blogger collaborations means you’re both putting your brains together and curating fresh content.

How do you initiate blogger to blogger collaborations? Read on to learn more!

  1. Make sure the blogger is a good fit.

The blogger you want to collaborate with doesn’t necessarily need to be the same niche as you (ex. I would love to collaborate with a fitness blogger so I can show off activewear while they show off appropriate exercises). However, your aesthetic and reader demographics should be similar. For example, I’m highly visual and I prefer professional photos for my posts. It wouldn’t be ideal for me to collaborate with someone with iPhone only photos on their blog. My audience is also primarily 24-34 year old women, so ideally I wouldn’t want to team up with someone who has a readership that consists of men aged 18-24. It wouldn’t benefit either of us!

  2. Brainstorm some sort of idea.

When I first started pitching people and saying “hey, let’s collab!” but didn’t provide any collaboration ideas, it didn’t get me anywhere. You don’t have to nail down every detail right off the bat, however, pitch the blogger some sort of idea. A few years ago, I knew I wanted to do a Style Scenario series with some of my other favorite style bloggers. I proposed a 4-week series, and also worked on getting sponsors to gift us product to style, as well as working on brainstorming a theme for the series as well. The more details you can provide about a potential collab, the more likely you’ll get bloggers on board.

  3. Think outside of the box.

Like I said before, giveaways are not collaborations. While they’re a great way to gain followers, and a tool I’ve definitely used before, it really doesn’t involve any creativity. Try harder, guys!

  4. Pitch your little heart out.

It’s a lot easier to pitch bloggers you already know, but sometimes you might want to pitch someone you’ve never really interacted with before. That’s totally okay! You will need to be a little more formal/professional when pitching someone you’ve never teamed up with before and don’t know that well. Make sure you introduce yourself properly and make your collab idea very clear. Here’s a sample pitch you can reference when the day comes:

    Hi ______!

My name is Alicia and I’m a life and style blogger over at I’m a huge fan of what you’re doing, and I would absolutely love to team up with you for a post sometime!

My idea for a collaboration consisted of {X, Y, and Z}. The ideal timeline would be {DATE RANGE}, and I think we could get {ABC Company} to sponsor some items for our collaboration.

Let me know what your thoughts are! Looking forward to hopefully working with you.

  5. Revise your idea as needed.

Your idea might take off, the other blogger might reject it, or it might need tweaking. Be flexible, you want other bloggers to bring their creative juices to the table to make the idea pop.

One of my new favorite sites is Flock and Gabble, they have a really awesome free collaboration guide that I’ve also contributed to before, as well as a Collab Camp. Check out my interview that I did a few months ago with them all about the blog world!

What tips and tricks do you have for collaborating with other bloggers and other blogger collaborations?

As a new blogger, I really appreciate this post! I love that so many experienced bloggers are posting guides to help out. Community over competition at its finest. Also, I hope you don’t mind that I literally screenshotted? (Not sure if that’s a word…) the sample email and I’m gonna work on making my own for collabs so thank you so so much!
