One of the things I love about blogging is sharing how I splurge on certain pieces and save on other things. I’ve moved quite a bit over the last few years — I’ve bounced between four different cities, and have had a couple of different apartments in each town. It’s hard for me to splurge on a piece of furniture at this point in my life because I haven’t settled down just yet — and I have another big move coming up this June.

What’s a girl to do? In the past few years, I’ve gotten really into IKEA DIY Hacks. And you guys seemed to love them: the two that I’ve posted to the blog are my most popular posts of all time (ICYMI: you can see them here and here). At the moment, I’m currently tidying up and reorganizing my place for spring. What better place to revamp than my office area?

MY DIY IKEA DESK TUTORIAL

While I loved my old desk (which was also from IKEA, as well!), I wanted a desk that was a little slimmer for my current space. I found that I had too much cabinet space with my old desk, believe it or not, and I was holding on to too many old documents and unnecessary files from my college days. Seriously, I found a sorority recruitment binder when I was cleaning out my old desk — it was time to let some of those things go!

When I spotted the IKEA BESTÅ BURS Desk at my local store, I knew it was the perfect addition to my space. I think the drawer space is ideal for my current situation: I have enough space to store the essentials, and I’ve started to scan and shred other documents to reduce some of the drawer clutter I had from my old desk. I loved the glossy surface of the desk, and I knew I could make the piece look even more luxe with a little spray paint. I spray painted the legs of my IKEA SKRUVSTA Swivel Chair a few years ago, so I decided to have my current desk match my chair to a T!

White & Gold DIY IKEA Desk — Tools:

IKEA BESTÅ BURS Desk
One can of metallic spray paint (find it at your local hardware store)
Cardboard or plastic dropcloth to spray on

Step One:

Unless you have a garage with a ton of ventilation, you will need to spray paint outside. This project is perfect to complete in the spring: the ideal temperature to spray paint outdoors is between 50-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step Two:

I’d recommend applying 2-3 coats of spray paint for the legs. This spray paint dries to the touch in 30 minutes and dries enough to handle in an hour. You can put on a new coat of paint after 2 hours, or after 24 hours.

Step Three:

Allow at least 24 hours for the paint to fully dry. Then, assemble your desk as normal! This DIY IKEA desk project is quick, easy, and doesn’t require a ton of legwork.

Did you have to sand/prime the desk legs before spray painting or did you just spray paint them straight out of the box? Thanks for posting! I just bought this desk and was looking for ways to customize it.

      I’d recommend sanding for sure!
