I haven’t been on a cruise in a couple of years and am long overdue for one. Next week, I’m setting sail with my beloved Celebrity Cruises, and I’m excited to bring my mom along this time around! I’m so thankful she is retired and can fully relax and explore new countries with me.
Are you also ready to embark on a luxurious 7-day Caribbean cruise? While traveling to new sites and running around a ship is exciting, packing for a week-long cruise can feel daunting.
But don’t worry: I’ve got you covered with a comprehensive and easy-to-follow packing list. From bathing suits to formal wear, I’ve included everything you need for a comfortable and stylish vacation. After going on several cruises over the past ten years, I’ve learned from my packing mistakes and gathered tips from fellow cruisers on board. Caribbean Cruise Packing: What Not to Pack
Learn from my mistakes: some items cannot be brought on a cruise because they pose a safety risk. Traveling on a cruise ship is a lot different than staying in a hotel or hopping on a flight. A number of everyday items pose a fire risk to the ship.
If you forget and accidentally pack one of these items, you will have it confiscated at check-in, but you will most likely be able to pick it up upon disembarkation (e.g., I packed a steamer once and was able to pick it up once the cruise was over).
Every cruise ship has different policies, and I’d recommend checking on your cruise line’s website before setting sail. However, this is what you should generally avoid:
- Steamers
- Clothing irons
- Electric blankets or heating pads
- Oil diffusers
- Baby monitors
- Electrical extension cords
- Aerosols (except for personal care toiletries)

If you’re preparing for a Caribbean cruise lasting seven days or more, it’s a good idea to consider additional storage solutions for your cabin. I personally love using magnetic hooks to hang my hats and bags. If you’re short on space, an over-the-door shoe organizer can be a fantastic way to display and store your toiletries. To keep your cabin smelling as fresh as possible, I recommend packing some Poo-Pourri and a laundry bag to neatly store your dirty clothes.
Another packing must-have for a cruise? A multi-port charger. Cruise ships typically don’t have many outlets in the staterooms, and if you have more than two devices to charge, I’d highly recommend this! If you’re sailing on a Caribbean cruise, you’ll most likely have US/UK electrical outlets on board, but double-check with your cruise line before packing.

Of course, you won’t want to forget to pack a few swimsuits for your Caribbean cruise! Whether you plan to enjoy the ship’s pool during a sea day, head to the beach on a port day, or enjoy the sauna, I plan on packing at least a few swimwear options for your journey.
Don’t forget to pack a wet bag to separate your damp swimwear from your dry clothing when packing!

Bringing a coverup or two is essential for your next Caribbean cruise. A good cover up can also double as a daytime outfit for all your port adventures. Coverups vary in coverage, so pick what makes you feel the most comfortable!

Speaking of port days, if you don’t plan on swimming or doing anything water-related on a port day, pack some casual daytime outfits so you can explore in style. I also like to pack some comfortable outfits for embarkation and disembarkation days. Check your schedule to see how many daytime outfits you’ll need to pack for your 7 day Caribbean cruise!
A classic daytime outfit is a pair of denim shorts and a top, but I’ve also been loving a breezy matching set lately: it makes you look put together without a ton of effort!

While you’re soaking up the sun in the Caribbean, remember to protect your skin from UV rays! I pack hats and sunscreen for cruises and have double the protection. Pack sunscreen for both your face and body, and opt for a reef-friendly sunscreen.

Caribbean Cruise Packing Essential: Eveningwear
Depending on the cruise line you’re sailing with, you might have some themed nights or a main dining event that requires a more “formal” dress code. No, you absolutely do not need to pack a ballgown for the occasion, but for dinners in general, I like to skip the denim and the flip flops and opt for a comfortable but sleek sandal and a comfortable dress or matching set. Accessorize it with your favorite jewelry, and boom, it’s an easy way to look put together!
Tell the men in your life to pack a pair of dress pants, some collared shirts, and nicer shoes for the occasion.

Carry-On:
- Passport
- Bikini and coverup (if you want to lounge in the pool as soon as you embark!)
- Sandals for pool/beach
- Books/Magazines/Kindle
- Prescriptions, over-the-counter meds & any other personal items
- Motion sickness medication
- Charging cables for electronics
- Multi-port charger (you will likely only have a couple of outlets in your stateroom)
- Curling Iron/Flat Iron
- Toiletries
- Shampoo/conditioner/styling products
- Face wash/lotion/toners/serums/etc
- Contact lens solution
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Makeup
- Sunscreen (it’s costly once you get to the hotel!)
- Backup feminine care products (will also be expensive on the ship)
- Cash for international ports (they will take USD, so there is no need to convert money!)
- Sunglasses
- Lip Balm (this one has SPF 20!)
- Jewelry (Don’t check!)
- Glasses (if you’re not wearing them on the plane)
- Lanyard (optional, but you will be provided a cruise card that you’ll need to carry with you at all times!)

What should I absolutely not forget to pack for a Caribbean cruise?
Your passport (or birth certificate + government ID if sailing from a U.S. homeport), motion sickness medication, reef-safe sunscreen, and a multi-port charger. The charger is non-negotiable — staterooms have shockingly few outlets.
What are the carry-on rules for a cruise ship?
Unlike flying, cruise ship carry-on “rules” are less about size and more about prohibited items. You’ll go through a security screening similar to an airport. Items like steamers, irons, electric blankets, and extension cords will be confiscated. Alcohol policies vary by cruise line — some allow you to bring a bottle of wine at embarkation, others don’t. Check your specific cruise line’s prohibited items list before you pack.
What do you wear on formal night on a Caribbean cruise?
This depends heavily on the cruise line. On Celebrity Cruises, “Evening Chic” nights call for cocktail dresses, dressy jumpsuits, or a polished blouse-and-pants combo — you don’t need a ballgown. Royal Caribbean has “formal” nights where some guests go full black tie and others show up in a blazer and nice jeans. My honest advice: a midi dress or a sleek two-piece set works on almost any cruise line’s dressed-up night, and you can rewear it at port. Pack one or two elevated evening looks and you’re set.
How many outfits should I pack for a 7-day cruise?
A 7-day cruise typically has 4–5 sea days and 3–4 port days, depending on the itinerary. I’d suggest: 3–4 swimsuits, 2–3 coverups, 4–5 casual daytime outfits, 2 evening/dinner looks (one of which can double as a formal night outfit), and comfortable walking shoes for port excursions. Resist the urge to overpack — stateroom closets are smaller than they look.
Can I do laundry on a cruise ship?
Most major cruise lines have self-service laundromats onboard (usually coin or card operated). Some lines offer laundry service for a fee. If you’re a light packer, this is great news. I personally bring a small laundry bag and a few dryer sheets and do one load mid-cruise.
